Eliminate the No Phone Policy in Washoe County School Districts

Eliminate the No Phone Policy in Washoe County School Districts

The Issue

As a student experiencing anxiety and requiring emergency contact with family members, I am heavily affected by the existing 'no phone policy' in the Washoe County School District. There are times when I require immediate connection with my family, most significantly during panic attacks and situations where my anxiety levels spike. Having my phone accessible is not just about communication, but also about freedom and managing my anxiety.

Decades of research reveal the increasing prevalence of anxiety among children and teenagers. According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 1 in 3 of all adolescents aged 13 to 18 will experience an anxiety disorder. Having the ability to communicate with a trusted family member or friend in high-anxiety moments can help to alleviate these symptoms.

Moreover, cell phones are often vital tools in the case of emergencies, allowing students to contact their parents or guardians swiftly if needed. They are also useful tools to help students learn. Most students are able to use cell phones and makes learning easier and more accessible, productive, and informative.

This petition calls for the Board of Education to reconsider and eliminate the 'no phone policy' in the Washoe County School District. The need for clear, immediate communication, particularly in this era of increased nationwide violence and individual anxiety disorders, should supersede any policy that restricts such communication. Please sign this petition to support the adjustment of policies that affect not only education but also the well-being of students.
