The Issue

I love driving my electric vehicle; it’s an efficient, eco-friendly choice that represents the future of transportation. Unfortunately, my excitement is often dampened by the additional and, frankly, unfair alternative vehicle tax imposed by the state of Georgia . As a responsible citizen, I diligently pay taxes, including those on the energy I consume to power my vehicle, so it's unreasonable to be burdened with a taxation system that unfairly penalizes me for not using gasoline.

This tax on alternative fuel vehicles was initially conceived to address the decreasing gasoline tax revenues, which are traditionally used to fund road and infrastructure maintenance. However, this approach overlooks several key points: First, we, the owners of alternative vehicles, already contribute significantly to state revenues through various other energy taxes and fees. Secondly, adding a separate tax on alternative vehicles does not consider the environmental benefits our vehicles bring, which translates into larger societal savings on health costs and pollution management.

A better approach would be to re-evaluate the pricing and taxation model that accounts fairly for all users of roadways, rather than placing an uneven burden on those contributing to a cleaner environment. For example, focusing on congestion pricing or improving the energy levies on electricity providers ensures all road users contribute more equitably.

Furthermore, statistically, electric vehicles comprise a small fraction of the total vehicles on the road. According to recent studies, their current contribution to road wear-and-tear is disproportionately low compared to traditional gasoline vehicles. Pursuing a more comprehensive, forward-thinking transportation funding model could actually incentivize more residents to switch to greener options, helping Minnesota to achieve its environmental goals.

Taxing alternative vehicles discourages their use and contradicts efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

I urge the Georgia state authorities to reconsider the alternative vehicle tax policy. Together, let's create a system that supports cleaner energy without unfairly burdening those who choose to adopt it early. Please sign the petition to help eliminate this unjust tax today.
