The Issue
As a dedicated arts students at Neshaminy High School, We believe in maximizing every moment of our education. However, the implementation of sweep passes and the restriction of our restroom facilities are placing unfair limitations on our learning experience. Currently, we are forced to spend about 15 minutes of our valuable class time traversing the school just to access restrooms, especially for those like us who are in art classes like ceramics, drama, and music, stationed near restrooms we can’t use.
Sweep passes were introduced to help manage student movement, but they have turned into a barrier for timely classroom attendance. Extended breaks for locker visits have been cut from 5 minutes to four minutes, which is often insufficient in a large school where classroom distances can vary greatly. Having to leave class early with minute passes disrupts our learning, just to comply with these restrictive policies.
Additionally, the current bathroom situation exacerbates the problem. With only two bathroom facilities available per gender on main street for a student body of roughly 3,000, the accessibility is severely limited. Such conditions not only infringe on our rights to necessary facilities but also affect our punctuality in attending classes. When you’re continually late to music and art classes or forced to spend chunks of your day just moving between essential facilities, it hampers our overall educational experience.
Our petition is simple: Restore the locker break duration to five minutes to allow students a reasonable time to transition between classes efficiently. Eliminate the sweep pass policy which unnecessarily penalizes students for circumstances beyond their control. Increase the number of accessible restroom facilities to accommodate all students comfortably without prolonged waits, thereby improving our educational environment.
In gym class, we were all informed that new 'vape detectors' and further bathroom monitoring is now in place. We can all agree enough is enough, and neshaminy drama students are here to make a change.
It's time to recognize that simple administrative adjustments can make a significant impact on student well-being and academic success. Help us champion this cause for better management of Neshaminy High School’s infrastructure and policies. Please sign this petition to bring about necessary changes for a fair and functional school day.
