Eliminate Statute of Limitations for Sexual Abuse and Trafficking Crimes

Eliminate Statute of Limitations for Sexual Abuse and Trafficking Crimes
The Issue
Join us in advocating for the abolition of Statutes of Limitations in every state for survivors of sexual abuse, child abuse, and trafficking. This crucial change will empower survivors to seek justice and hold their abusers accountable, no matter how much time has passed.
Psychological trauma, such as Repressed Memory Syndrome, can delay memory recollection, highlighting the need for no time limit on pressing charges.
My name is Britteny Bellinger, I am a sexual abuse survivor seeking justice not only for myself but as an advocate for others whose voices have been silenced.
I was just a child when my brother-in-law first assaulted me. I contacted my mother and sister for help, but no help or protection was given. My brain ended up blocking these memories to protect me. It wasn't until my mid-30s that all the memories came rushing back during a panic attack. It took me 3 years of processing to realize these memories were accurate. My family confirmed everything... I had told them as a child and had no memory of this. I had been living in complete survival mode. He had even confessed to them what he did.
He went on to assault others, even after confessing, and remains free today while posing a threat to society.
According to the FBI, rape is the second most severely punished crime. Yet, many offenders go unpunished due to these statutes. In the U.S., a sexual assault occurs every 73 seconds, with many cases going unreported due to social and legal barriers (RAINN, 2021).
The Adult Survivors Act in New York demonstrated the power of removing time limits. Thousands sought justice when given the chance to "look back." Abolishing Statutes of Limitations nationwide will ensure that survivors can seek justice regardless of when they are ready.
Eliminating these limitations empowers survivors to come forward. We DEMAND the removal of the Statute of Limitations for all sexual abuse and trafficking crimes in every state.
