Today, as a resident of this locale, I was witness to the tragic passing of a disabled man at the Stanley Street East level crossing in Coorparoo, and it has left our community saddened and shocked. The level crossings have been a long-standing threat to the safety of our community, their dangerous nature evident and unaddressed for numerous years. Inaction from politicians who deem this issue as "too hard" to solve has led to the unnecessary risk of lives, yielding devastating consequences. It is high time this drawn-out issue receives the attention it warrants. Let us remember that in the past decade, level crossings have been identified as a serious risk to public safety, accounting for approximately 30% of all railway fatalities (source: Department of Infrastructure and Transport). The removal of the level crossings will not only reduce the risk but will also improve traffic congestion and noise pollution. We implore our local government and public transport authorities to take immediate action; the removal of the Stanley Street East and Cavendish Road level crossings are no longer a request - it is a necessity.
