Our school needs to get rid of the Securly firewall, which has been accused of “Creating a Perfect Storm of Human Rights Abuses” (Electronic Frontier Foundation). In a report by 2 United States Senators that says firewalls like Securly are “surveillance” and may “pose risks to students’ civil rights”, Securly is mentioned 41 times. They have been sued for selling student’s data without their consent, and there are countless examples of actual educational websites being blocked because of Securly. Even with all this spying and civil rights risks, it’s still basically useless. I mean, if you look up “securly school firewall” on YouTube, almost all the results are about how to bypass it. Also, the school handbook says that “Within the guidelines of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), freedom of speech and access to information will be honored”, and the CIPA does not mention anything about video games, social media, etc. Our school needs to stop using a useless firewall that spies on us and risks our civil rights.
