The Issue

Hello everyone,

I'm writing this to address an issue that I, along with many other students in our school, have been struggling with. The implementation of QR code-based attendance might seem like a modern solution, but it has become a significant obstacle for many of us.

Recently, our school introduced this new system to track attendance, requiring each student to scan a unique QR code upon arrival at school. The aim is to streamline the process, promising efficiency and accuracy, but it is doing more harm than good. Many students, including myself, have found ourselves disadvantaged by this new system.

Firstly, let's talk about timeliness. Students who arrive even a minute late often face technical issues with the scanning process. Faulty school Wi-Fi or unexpected phone glitches can result in a failure to scan the code, inaccurately marking students as absent. This is unjust because several of these students were on campus on time but are penalized due to factors beyond their control.

Furthermore, not every student has access to a smartphone. This discriminatory approach puts underprivileged students at a disadvantage, further widening the socio-economic divide within our educational environment. Our school should be a place that nurtures growth and learning, not one that creates barriers due to technological constraints.

Consider the mental pressure this adds to us students. Instead of focusing on class preparation or networking with peers before lectures, we are constantly anxious about scanning the QR code correctly and on time. This system, developed with the intent to improve efficiency, is inadvertently creating stress and impacting our academic performance and well-being.

There are better alternatives that we can explore. Teachers know their students better than any machine or code. We propose reverting to the traditional roll call or finding a more inclusive system that doesn't rely solely on technology. Systems that accommodate all students and account for the everyday challenges we face can be equally, if not more, effective.

Our request is simple yet crucial: eliminate the QR code attendance system in favour of one that supports student growth and fairness. Let us prioritize our education over unnecessary technological burden.

Please sign this petition to show our school administration that there is a vast number of us standing for a fairer and more inclusive attendance system.
