The Issue

I am a senior living on a fixed income. I've worked hard throughout my life to ensure that my home and automobile are completely paid off. Yet, I find myself struggling to keep up with increasing property taxes, which become more burdensome each year. In Jefferson County, Kentucky alone, over 70% of property taxes are allocated to the JCPS school system. As someone with no children in the school system, it's increasingly difficult to justify this financial stress.

For countless seniors just like me, living on a fixed income means carefully budgeting each and every expense. Property taxes consume significant portions of our limited resources, leaving many to choose between paying for essential needs such as medication, food, and utilities. It's simply unfair for those who have fulfilled their financial responsibilities by paying off their homes and vehicles to continue bearing such heavy tax burdens.

Moreover, many households, regardless of age, are achieving the American Dream by paying off their homes. They, too, deserve relief from property taxes. Removing this financial obligation could provide significant economic relief and foster greater economic freedom for those who have diligently managed their finances.

The solution is clear: eliminate property taxes for seniors and all individuals who own their homes and automobiles outright. This change could be life-altering for seniors, enabling them to live comfortably and securely and supporting younger families in maintaining their homes free from the looming threat of excessive taxation.

Implementing this policy would not only support our seniors and responsible homeowners but would ultimately spur economic growth and stability. We call on local lawmakers to introduce legislation to eliminate property taxes on primary residences and automobiles for seniors and those who have cleared their outstanding loans.

Stand with us in advocating for a fairer tax system that respects the financial contributions of seniors and responsible homeowners. Sign this petition to urge Jefferson County and the state of Kentucky to lead the way in creating a more equitable tax landscape for all its residents.
