Eliminate Parental Income from Children's Disability Benefit Assessment

Eliminate Parental Income from Children's Disability Benefit Assessment
The Issue
As a single parent of an 11-year-old child who faces a lifelong disability, I, like many in my situation, often struggle to meet financial demands. My modest income barely covers our basic expenses, including my son's specific daily care needs, yet it is ironically penalised by the Social Security System. The system deducts parental earnings when determining a child’s eligibility for social security benefits. Parents everywhere provide essential support such as food, shelter, and necessities for their children. Our earnings should not negatively impact the much-needed financial assistance we receive for our children's disability benefits.
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 3.5 million children in the U.S. suffer from a disability, out of which about 1.5 million are from low-income families. This deduction policy unjustly burdens these already struggling families even more.
It is crucial to revise this policy. We need to ensure that disability benefits genuinely uphold the children who deserve them the most without penalizing the parents who are doing their best to provide for them under challenging circumstances. Please support us in our plea to remove parental income from assessing children's disability benefits calculation. Sign this petition now.
