Eliminate New York Regents as a graduation requirement for all graduating classes.
The Issue
Every year, countless students across New York face immense stress and anxiety due to the pressure of passing the Regents exams. As a New York student myself, I know firsthand the frustration and heartbreak that accompanies falling short by just one point. The Regents exams are not a true measure of a student's intelligence, potential, or understanding of a subject.
These exams were designed as a standardized way to assess student learning and ensure a level of consistency across the state. However, this one-size-fits-all approach ignores the diverse range of learning styles, strengths, and abilities of our students. In an age where personalized education is increasingly recognized as essential, forcing students to conform to a rigid testing system is outdated and unfair.
Furthermore, the pressure to perform well on the Regents often detracts from genuine learning and curiosity. Students are pushed to focus on rote memorization and test-taking strategies rather than developing critical thinking skills and a deep understanding of the materials. This approach produces stress rather than excitement for learning, discouraging students and potentially triggering feelings of inadequacy and disillusionment.
Across the nation, leading education systems are shifting away from reliance on standardized testing to evaluate students. Instead, they are adopting more holistic approaches that recognize the variety of strengths students possess. New York needs to follow this trend to provide a fair, supportive, and meaningful education system for all its students.
Therefore, I urge the New York State Department of Education to reevaluate and ultimately eliminate the necessity for Regents exams as a graduation requirement. This reform should apply universally to all grades and not be restricted to a particular cohort, such as the Class of 2028.
By removing this barrier, we can allow students to focus on learning in a way that truly resonates with them, promoting confidence, and nurturing a lifelong passion for education. Together, we can create a more just and equitable education system in New York.
