Eliminate Math Curriculum at Cheldelin Middle School

The Issue

I am a student at Cheldelin Middle School, and I am signing this petition because the mathematics curriculum in the said school deeply affects me emotionally. The current approach to teaching mathematics in our school system is inadequate and often leaves me feeling frustrated and discouraged.

Given that a significant portion of United States middle-school students scored below proficiency level in math (as per reports of the National Assessment of Educational Progress), it's clear that our traditional teaching methods don't cater to the diverse learning needs and mental wellbeing of students.

I understand the importance of math in various avenues of life; however, the overly focused and rigid math at Cheldelin Middle School heavily impacts students' self-esteem and emotional health, which could lead to potentially harmful long-term effects. A balance needs to be struck wherein students learn essential math skills but not at the detriment of their mental health.

We urge Cheldelin Middle School to reassess its math curriculum, potentially seeking alternatives that are less rigid and focus more on comprehension and application rather than rote learning. This can make an impactful difference in the lives of students like me, who are struggling with the current system.
