Eliminate Lexia Powerup from Henrico County Public Schools

The Issue

I am a student in Henrico County, Virginia, and I am writing this petition out of personal frustration with the program Lexia Powerup. This software is currently being used in our public schools but it's not helping us learn or grow academically. Instead, it has become a source of stress and is simply wasting our valuable advisory study time when we used to be able to do schoolwork.

Lexia Powerup claims to be an innovative tool for personalized learning, but many students like myself find no benefit from it. We are not alone in this sentiment; many students have claimed this is a terrible program that needs to be removed from the education system. According to research by the National Education Policy Center, there's little evidence that personalized learning software like Lexia Powerup improves student achievement (NEPC, 2019).

Education should not be stressful; it should inspire curiosity. However, programs like Lexia Powerup often lead to increased anxiety among students due to their lack of flexibility. Students have been interviewed about this program, and most of them said that Lexia should not be in the school system (97% of all students at the surveyed school, Tuckahoe Middle School).

We urge Henrico County Public Schools to reconsider their use of Lexia Powerup.

Please sign this petition if you believe in providing quality education for all students in Henrico County without resorting to ineffective and stressful software programs.

Goal: 24500 signatures (Majority of the students who attend HCPS)
