Eliminate Lead-Based Paint from All State-Owned Buildings in Hilo

The Issue

As a parent whose family frequently visits gyms across Hilo, I am deeply concerned about the health impacts of lead-based paint. These gyms have become a vital part of our lives, providing my family a safe place to play volleyball and socialize. However, the presence of lead-based paint warnings at these venues is alarming.

Lead, as several studies confirm, can have severe health effects, especially on developing children. According to the World Health Organisation, lead exposure can lead to intellectual disability in children, among other health concerns. Above that, there's no known 'safe' blood lead concentration; even small amounts might be detrimental.

Now, imagine the massive health risk our kids and we are exposed to daily because of these state-owned buildings covered in lead paint. We are forced to choose between discontinuing our favorite sport or exposing our children to harmful substances.

The objective of this petition is to call upon the state authorities in Hilo to act responsibly. We urge them to recognize this severe health risk by initiating an immediate and thorough removal of lead-based paint from all state-owned buildings.

The safety and health of our community must be a priority. Please support this cause and sign this petition. Let us ensure a safe environment for our children to play and grow, free from the threats of lead poisoning.
