The Issue

A year ago, I experienced firsthand the overwhelming burden that homework can place on students. After school got out at 3:15 p.m., I found myself working until 7:00 p.m. or later, far too often skipping dinner and missing valuable time with my family in order to complete all of the assignments for my eight classes.

This wasn't merely a personal sacrifice; it was an unhealthy routine that seemed to be shared among my peers. The sheer volume of homework inhibits not only our ability to rest and engage with our families, but also our opportunity to develop important life skills outside of school. It leaves us stressed and disengaged, turning education from a process of curiosity and exploration into one of stress and burnout.

Studies show that excessive homework can negatively impact students' physical and mental health. According to research from Stanford University, students who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance in their lives, and alienation from society.

Moreover, in countries such as Finland, where students have little to no homework, educational outcomes are exemplary. This suggests that we can maintain or even enhance learning without over-reliance on assignments that extend the school day unnecessarily.

I believe that eliminating homework from our education system will not only reduce stress and boost student morale but also promote a more holistic learning experience. By freeing up time, students can engage in extracurricular activities, pursue personal interests, and spend time with their families, contributing to their well-rounded development.

Let's advocate for a shift in how we approach education, one that values quality of life as much as academic success. Join me in calling for schools to eliminate homework and support balanced, effective learning. Please sign this petition to bring about necessary change in our education system.
