As a resident of Wichita Falls and a regular user of the Circle Trail, I'm concerned about the safety and enjoyment of our beloved walking path. Recently, the cycling community raised  concerns about the safety risks posed by scooters and other motorized vehicles on the trail, which ultimately led to their ban. However, bicycles, which present the exact same hazards, remain allowed on the trail.

The Circle Trail should be a walking trail  for pedestrians to enjoy leisurely strolls, safe jogging, and peaceful experiences amidst nature. When cyclists weave in and out of these paths, the risk of accidents significantly increases, making the trail less safe for walkers, families with small children, and the elderly who frequently use it.

Research indicates that shared pathways, when not carefully managed, can lead to a mix of accident-induced injuries, ranging from minor abrasions to severe collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bicycle-involved pedestrian accidents result in over 1,000 injuries annually in the U.S. These statistics should not be ignored when prioritizing safety on our local trails.

Beyond safety, the presence of cyclists also changes the nature of our Circle Trail. What was once a tranquil walking area becomes a bustling thoroughfare, detracting from the serene experience sought by many residents and visitors.

To ensure the Circle Trail remains a safe and peaceful space for all, bicycles should be diverted to other bike-specific paths or roads that better suit their speed and nature.
