Eliminate Artificial Turf Fields in Coppell Schools

Eliminate Artificial Turf Fields in Coppell Schools
The Issue
I am a member of the Coppell community deeply concerned about the health implications of our artificial turf fields in schools. We currently use turf made from chopped up used car tires, an alarming fact considering the potential harm to our children's safety. These fields consist of harmful elements such as lead, heavy metals, benzene, arsenic, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), PFAS, and phthalates, which are known carcinogens, neurotoxins, and/or endocrine disruptors.
This concern is not ill-founded. A study by Environment and Human Health, Inc. reveals that the toxins from pellet material could be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin, posing serious health risks especially to children (Source: Environment and Human Health, Inc.). Furthermore, it is reported that there are elevated cancer cases in soccer goalkeepers who play on crumb rubber fields (Source: Washington State Department of Health).
Our children and educators deserve safer alternatives. Hence, we demand the replacement of all artificial turf fields in Coppell schools with natural grass. Natural grass not only offers an equally effective playing surface but it also has numerous benefits; it aids in fighting climate change, improves groundwater quality, and boosts mental health.
In this effort, we cannot afford to be bystanders. For the sake of our children and the generations to come, we encourage you to sign this petition. Together, let's create a healthier, safer environment for our students. Act now. Sign the petition.
