Make Insulin Prices Affordable

Make Insulin Prices Affordable

The Issue

My name is Alyssa Gonzales and I am a senior in high school living in Massachusetts.  I have had Type 1 Diabetes for the past eleven years.  It is a chronic, demanding disease that you can never get a break from.  All of your days are spent checking your blood sugars, making adjustments to keep your levels steady, and constantly buying and gathering supplies. I am very passionate about advocating for Affordable Healthcare for everyone in the US and making sure all Diabetics get Insulin, the necessary drug we need to stay alive, at an attainable price.

This disease is not a choice, does not have a cure, and it does not go away.  Diabetics should not be penalized for being diagnosed with this disease and wanting to stay alive.  Over the past few years in the US there have been a countless number of deaths because of Insulin Rationing.  This is when Diabetics spread out their insulin doses in order to make their supply last longer.  This is deadly and NOT an option.  These inflated prices are not the pharmacy's fault or the doctor's either, It is the insulin manufacturer's.

Did you know that over 99% of all of the US supply of insulin is produced by three companies: Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi? This allows them to set these overinflated prices because they are the only option.  Do not let this be swept under the rug time and time again.  Help Diabetics get the drug they need to stay alive at an attainable price!
