The Issue

The City of Los Angeles has recognized the EXTREMELY high cost of living by approving a city-wide Olympic Wage ordinance that raises pay to $30 per hour for airport workers at both Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the private Van Nuys Airport (VNY). This framework was adopted based on the principles that with the increased demands on the airport worker force and the need for a sustainable wage, all employees should earn enough to meet basic needs and afford to participate in the communities they serve.

However,  workers at Hollywood-Burbank Airport (BUR) continue to earn significantly less than their LAX counterparts, despite facing ALL of the same economic challenges in one of the nation's most expensive regions. Their current wages do not adequately reflect the exorbitant realities of housing, transportation, food, healthcare, and other essential expenses in the greater Los Angeles area.
According to MIT's living wage calculator, the cost of living in Los Angeles County that is required to maintain a basic standard of living equals a minimum of $28.92 per hour, which is far more than the current State minimum wage, which the City of Burbank currently observes, at $16.50 . Because of this, many BUR Airport employees are working far beyond the standard 40 hour work week or are forced to hold a second job, and sometimes even a third job in order supplement their income to attain a modest quality of life.

Employees at the Hollywood-Burbank Airport are the heart and soul of its operations.  They hold critical roles in keeping passengers safe, flights on schedule, and the aviation system running smoothly. They do so with a great financial benefit to the city it operates in but Burbank has yet to be recognized for their efforts.

We are calling on Burbank City leaders to establish a wage ordinance that reflects today's economic conditions and aligns with the standards being adopted across the region. Airport workers deserve more than the minimum needed to survive. They deserve a wage that allows them to live with dignity in the communities they help support.

Sign this petition to support fair wages and economic equity for ALL Hollywood Burbank Airport workers. Every signature helps send a clear message: EQUAL WORK DESERVES EQUAL WAGES FOR ALL.
