Elevate Animal Abandonment to a Felony in Oklahoma

Elevate Animal Abandonment to a Felony in Oklahoma
The Issue
I am a dog owner, and my dogs have never let me down. They provide unconditional love and loyalty, and it's our responsibility not to let them down. However, in Oklahoma, the law doesn't reflect this commitment. Currently, abandoning a domestic animal like a dog or cat is only classified as a misdemeanor with minimal fines - no more severe than receiving a traffic ticket. This lack of stringent punishment has led to an alarming increase in stray animals across the state.
Oklahoma is overrun with helpless animals suffering from starvation, being hit by cars, hypothermia, and heat exhaustion. The current laws do little to deter individuals from committing such cruel acts against these innocent creatures who depend on us for their survival.
We believe that harming any living creature should carry significant consequences. Therefore we are calling for the reclassification of animal abandonment from a misdemeanor to felony within Oklahoma state law.
By doing so we can ensure that those who abandon their pets face appropriate legal repercussions which reflect the severity of their actions - providing justice for these defenseless animals while also acting as an effective deterrent against future instances of animal abandonment.
It's time we take action and protect our four-legged friends who give us nothing but love and companionship. Please sign this petition urging lawmakers in Oklahoma to elevate animal abandonment charges from misdemeanors to felonies.
