I would like to ask Mayor Ed Sullivan of West Springfield, MA and trustees to ban elephant rides at The Big E that will be held in September, 2014
The Issue
The Big E is a place for family and friends from all over the eastern states to come and have fun. But unfortunately, some of this fun includes seriously mistreated animals, especially the elephants that spend all day in the hot sun, walking around in circles with a man pushing it around with a bull hook. And the worst part is, we pay money for it, and let our kids be apart of something that would traumatize them for life if they knew how that elephant ended up there, and what kind of cruel training it went through to let the people who took the elephant away from it's family make a few bucks. After spending time working with orphaned and traumatized elephants in Thailand, I was taught about this elephant entertainment industry that most people like to turn their heads the other way to. I not only was educated about the sick rituals they do to these elephants as babies and adults, but I witnessed elephant cruelty up close. I was terrified when I learned how these elephants get sent to countries for entertainment, most of them being ripped away from their mothers at birth. As parents and civilized human beings we cannot let this violence go on any longer. The world may not ever stop torturing these gentile giants, but we can start with the Big E if we try.
