20,000 Greyhounds are bred into racing in Australia yearly. Just under half of these Greyhounds don’t make it to the track and when they do after 3-4 years their racing career has finished. The ‘useless’ Greyhounds are sent to universities for veterinary science training and experimentation; many end up at Vets as blood donors and/or euthanized; hundreds are sent to China; and others are simply shot.

Greyhounds which are born into racing which aren’t fast or fit enough for the track are killed or left out on the streets to be later locked up in pounds. Friends of the Hounds Inc. rescue these beautiful Greyhounds and through promotion and education change the perception of Greyhounds as “just a race dog”. The foundation’s mission is to rescue and rehome Greyhounds into suitable, permanent homes as family pets. 

Not only are thousands of Greyhounds used yearly but small animals such as possums, rabbits, kittens and piglets are used and killed for live baiting on the training track. You can only imagine the pain and torture these innocent animals go through hearing their spin-chilling squeals as they’re flung around the track (in the video included video) and often ripped apart. And the chances are you’re paying to keep this cruel industry afloat.
