The Issue

The current situation surrounding the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial election is at risk of jeopardizing the democratic rights of hundreds of individuals who are in isolation, immunocompromised, and disabled. Canada is one of the global leaders of democracy, in 2020 we were listed 5th overall on the democracy index. By allowing elections to go forward we are putting that legacy at risk. According to the Canada Elections Act (S.C. 2000, c. 9) section 6: every person who is qualified as an elector is entitled to vote at the polling station for that polling division. Which means that everyone who is over the age of 18 should feel safe and have access to a polling station. Many individuals rely on rides to polling stations, especially those who are low income or have mobility issues. Moreover, people might not feel safe to leave their house and vote.
