It has been 15 years since the last the last Parliamentary redelineation exercise in 2003. Over the period the Malaysian population has increased by more than 3 million but the number of Federal Parliamentary seats has remained at 222 and the state DUN seats has also remained the same.
The following can be observed within a Parliamentary constituency:
- Seat with 165,000 people in one single Parliamentary seat
- Urban seats with more than 120,000 people while rural seats with around 30,000 or less people only. A ratio of almost 4 : 1.
- Parliamentary seats that are purposely drawn along racial lines.
- Weird shape of Parliament seat often involving 2 or more municipal area.
It is time for more Parliamentary and state DUN seats to be added. The so-called "redelineation" exercise done prior to GE14 and tabled in Parliament on March 28, 2018 was merely the redrawing of existing Parliamentary seats to give the previous government an unfair advantage during GE14.
All Parliamentarians (both the ruling and opposition) and people of Malaysia must be involved in this redelineation exercise to ensure a fair representation of all Malaysians and future of the country.
