The Issue

Central Station, Lancaster Road, Leicester has been proposed for closure just five years after a multi million pound renovation and was declared fit for the next Century. Central Station is the busiest in the whole of Leicestershire and has been keeping the residents of the City and County safe for nearly 100 years. Central is perfectly situated to respond immediately to life threatening situations in the most densely populated parts of the City and provides specialist support to large incidents throughout the County.

Centrals area includes all the City high rise buildings, 2 major sports stadiums, 2 growing Universities (including every hall of residence), 2 major shopping centres, the biggest Hospital in the County, a Cathedral, a Prison and the Railway Station. Many of the Cities wealthiest citizens live within its immediate grasp and it protects thousands of its most disadvantaged as well as all of its visitors.

Proposals to move Centrals fire engines to Wigston and Market Harborough in concert with reducing fire cover across the county by a further 9 fire engines will drastically increase attendance times. The current plans will more than double attendance times. Whatever your political persuasion try holding your breath for over 10 minutes!!!! Over 50 years ago the Fire Service aimed to reach a confirmed fire in less than 5 minutes. The people of Leicester still deserve a real Emergency Service.

Leicester’s Fire fighters have successfully worked in close collaboration with senior management in recent times.  It is necessary to make huge savings and it has been identified at the local consultations that the headquarters could be sold with no detrimental effects to front line fire cover, raising (an estimated) 5-6 million pounds.

The petitioners respectfully request that the City Mayor and elected members of the Fire Authority reject the current proposals in February 2016 and come back to the table to plan the cuts together, in consultation with the workforce as they were asked to do by a group of senior local MPs.

The Decision Makers

Elected Members of the Combined Fire Authority and City Mayor Peter Soulsby
