Cruise ships worldwide are contributing to large scale oceanic pollution and making a negative impact on oceanic life by ruining habitats and harming marine plants and animals.  A typical cruise ship can hold over 3,000 passengers and crew members and produces over 210,000 US gallons of sewage during a one-week trip. This untreated raw human waste is typically emptied behind the ship into the sea rather than being treated and disposed of properly on land. In addition, over 1 million gallons of grey water from sinks, showers, and laundry services and more than 130 US gallons of hazardous waste are produced and dumped overboard during a one week trip on ONE cruise vessel.  When all cruise vessels from all cruise companies are considered; an average of 1 billion gallons of raw human sewage is dumped in to the Earth’s oceans each year.  As consumers and vacationers it is up to us to speak for the species who cannot speak for themselves and to encourage these companies to find new ways to reduce the amount of pollution that is being dumped into the ocean.
