Sun Metro has proposed a fare increase that El Paso City Council (Mass Transit Board) will vote on July 5th/July 6th. The fare increase is the backbone of the proposed budget. The budget will negatively impact the lives of disabled, elderly, poor, and working class people. We oppose all fare increases and believe that public transit should be free.

Some key fare increases to notice are a $0.70 increase for seniors, no free transfers and $0.50 increase in single ride tickets including LIFT rides. 

In Spring 2021, Sun Metro initially proposed a $4.00 fare for the LIFT. The LIFT is a paratransit service for disabled riders. After backlash from the disabled community, Sun Metro settled for a $3.00 fare for the coming fiscal year. The proposed fare will continue to increase for the next 6 years - to a staggering $4.50 per trip!!!!!! 

It is important to note that this 6 year fare increase only pertains for the LIFT for disabled riders. This is ableism. Disabled people already have additional living costs. This fare increase would create more barriers, place financial burden and negatively impact quality of life. 

Sun Metro’s proposed fare increase is ableist, classist, racist, and puts the financial burden of keeping the busses running on the most marginalized people in El Paso. 

El Paso City Council has the power to vote no to the proposed fare increase and they must. We ask El Pasoans/Sun Metro bus riders to contact your City Council Representative to oppose all fare increases.  We encourage you to join us in making public comments during the July 5th/6th meeting.
