EID HOLIDAY

The Issue

Eid is a Muslim holiday. There are two Eids: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. These holidays follow a lunar calendar, meaning they do not fall on the same date each year.

Why should Muslims have no school on Eid? Muslims are part of the community and have the right to celebrate their religious holidays without missing important school activities. Yes, there may be missed learning time, testing, or makeup work when students take a day off for Eid.

On Eid, Muslims attend Eid prayer and then gather with family and friends to celebrate. Eid simply is not complete without these traditions.

We are requesting approximately two days off in total for both Eids. If both holidays fall during the school year, the maximum would be just two days out of the total number of school days.

Many school districts in New Jersey with significant Muslim populations already recognize Eid as a day off, including Clifton, Teaneck, Edison, and South Brunswick to name a few. Why doesn’t the Boonton School District do the same for our children?

Our children should be free to celebrate their holidays without the added stress of school obligations. Recognizing Eid would send a powerful message that Muslim students are welcomed, respected, and accepted in their school district.

My goal is to explain why there should be no school on Eid. If you would like to support this cause, please add your signature. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you have a wonderful day.
