We are calling for UK mobile operators to provide care leavers with unlimited data for the period ‘lockdown’ or social distancing restrictions are in place. This is why:

Many care leavers cannot afford a TV, much less an internet connection, and during the current crisis are completely reliant on their mobile internet for keeping in touch with their support networks, accessing social media, engaging with online learning and for entertainment.

Due to their childhood experiences, many care leavers suffer from mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or PTSD. They struggle day-to-day COVID-19 or not. Unfortunately, the virus has only magnified the issues they are facing. Isolation is already a common problem and lockdown only makes this worse. Many care leavers are battling suicidal thoughts and with social distancing measures in place, they are losing their protective networks. Without something as simple as a distraction (often without that TV they rely solely on laptops or phones), those suicidal thoughts only get worse.

Care leavers are one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. Often care leavers have been through abuse and neglect. They are torn from their homes and families to live with complete strangers. They are more isolated on a day to day basis than any other vulnerable group. Making and maintaining friends is a greater obstacle than you could imagine. Such a traumatic past easily gets in the way. Being estranged from your family and being moved around the care system greatly impacts this. Care leavers rely on charity organisations to meet others to befriend. Imagine not having your family around to support you.

Something as simple as unlimited mobile data (which is free to the mobile companies) could save lives. For example, it could allow them access to online workshops and activities currently hosted by charities. It could provide easier access to social workers and personal advisors. Please help all care leavers through this difficult time by simply signing this petition. COVID-19 is difficult for all of us, imagine how hard it is with no family or friends...
