Prohibit Large Scale Events From Taking Place In Golden Gate Park
The Issue
Golden Gate Park is an urban public park that should not be treated as a fair grounds. The park was not designed to accommodate large events such as concerts that attract upwards of 200,000 people daily. The park is maintained through the local tax base and ought to remain open with unrestricted access 365 days a year.
Private organizations cause irreparable damage to the parks' ecosystem by installing chain link fencing that damages foliage and disrupts wildlife. It is well known that Golden Gate Park supports many animal species such as coyotes, quail, hawks and more that cannot adapt to the urban encroachment of large scale events that last weeks to a month (set up, take down).
Furthermore, the outlying neighborhoods that surround Golden Gate Park are overwhelmed for days on end into the wee hours during the event. Inadequate transportation in the surrounding neighborhoods means an increase in cars which not only clogs streets, but also is a hazard as event goers dive home after a day long of alcohol consumption.
In Summation, this ongoing disregard for the neighborhood and the taxpayers who are locked out of the park for weeks must stop. This decision of hosting massive events in a publicly owned, locally supported park, was never approved by the local voters nor was there ever any public outreach prior to the beginning of these events.
Appointed leaders must act now and acknowledge the costs these oversized events cause to taxpayers, wildlife and the eco system. The events must be moved entirely outside the park as this was not approved from the inception by the taxpayers. If the people are ignored then a ballot measure will have to be pursued as this pressing issue must be fixed with events leaving the park for more suitable locations in and around the city.
