Alex Sheppard started this petition to Senator Edward J. Markey and

There is no denying the negative and horrific effects that single use plastic has on the environment. Taking care of the environment is not only an issue of the past but an issue of the present and future. There are alternatives to single use plastic so why not use them daily? There is no reason as to why single use plastic still exists given all of the resources and technology we have as a developed country such as the US. According to Lindwall 2020, we produce 300 MILLION TONS of plastic each YEAR. Granted this is worldwide and not just in the US. however half of this number is for single use plastic. Reducing plastic is the most effective means to avoiding waste that deteriorates the only planet we have to survive on. These plastics that we use only once legitimately kill wildlife, wildlife that we need to be an effective ecosystem, wildlife that our children learn to love. We are apart of this ecosystem with all creatures. We must not forget our place in the system which keeps us and all things thriving. Animals and the planet do not deserve to suffer because of our laziness or reliance on the convenience of such plastic. Single use plastic is irresponsible and selfish when it comes to businesses always looking at profit over the ecosystem.

As a registered voter and proud citizen of Massachusetts, a state that values progressive ways, I feel as though it is our duty to join the rest of those who have already begun to ban single use plastic. We pride ourselves in being one of the most progressive states, we must do better.
