education over appearance

education over appearance
The Issue
We, the overlooked students, guardians, and the concerned community members of westside high school, are speaking out for immediate changes to the enforcement of the schools current uniform policy.
We were not given proper notice or preparation. There was no mention of this policy update during orientation, let alone any communicative email in advance. The updated dress code was published less than 24 hours before the enforcement began. Now, both students and teachers are facing consequences.
It has been reiterated that if we do not purchase uniforms from this specific vendor, we will be denied access to our education. This is a cash grab.
Today, august 13th 2025, only marks the third day of school.
We are already losing vital learning time. This is the opportunity that students have to build an academic foundation for the year, begin connecting with their peers, and some students still haven’t even met their teachers or stepped foot into a classroom due to this policy.
Whats worse? we’re being made to spin in 360 circles for visual inspection. In other cases, they’re even physically touching our legs to check the material of our pants. This isn’t about safety or education, This is an unacceptable violation of student personal boundaries and bodily autonomy.
We will not accept a system that prioritizes appearance as more important than education. we want to be clear: this is not an act of defiance, we are here to protect our right to learn. We are showing up every day wearing acceptable uniforms to the best of our ability, ready to sit, listen, grow, and THRIVE in our environment.
We ask of you four things.
1) We are sent back to our designated classes
2)Stop touching and physically inspecting student bodies in uniforms
3)Families are adjusting, give us a grace period. allow non disruptive uniform shirt wearers to attend class.
4)Respect peaceful student demonstrations and engage with us instead of condemning us.
