Equal rights for all past pupils at Grade 1 Admission for Sri Lankan Schools

The Issue

Circular for the Grade 1 admission for national schools was published recently in Sri Lanka for the year 2022. There are 4 subcategories under the OBA category.

1. For being a student in school-26 marks
2. For Educational achievements during school-25 marks
3. For Extra-Curricular activities- 25 marks
4. Achievement after school & Old Pupil  contribution - 24 marks

In the sub-category, 26 marks( 2 marks/year) are given just for the sake of being in the school from Grade 1. Whereas we propose to give only 1 mark/year and the remaining 13 marks to be allocated for the Sub-category 04. This way students who enter to national school after Grade 5 scholarship or O/L stand a chance to score the marks by contributing to the school development by engaging with Old Pupils Associations ( OPA). If 26 marks given for a student merely being in the school, where a student who attends the same school for grade 6 only gets 16 marks. And a student who attends for A/Ls gets only 4 marks. Most of them have no time to do extracurricular activities hence they even lose mid 50 marks.

What we propose is as follows

1. For being a student in school-13 marks
2. For Educational achievements during school-25 marks
3. For Extra-Curricular activities- 25 marks
4. Achievement after school & Old Pupil  contribution - 37 marks

Please support us in achieving this and compel the ministry to consider revising the marking schemes. Old Pupil Associations(OPA) will also get more member contributions so the schools can be developed with the assistance of OPA.
