OPEN College of the Desert Nursing Program

OPEN College of the Desert Nursing Program
The Issue
78 nursing students from College of the Desert were given an email on August 18th, 2020 just before the start of their 2020 fall semester, from the Vice President of College of the Desert. The email sent devastated 78 nursing students as they were told the fall semester would be placed on hold WITHOUT guarantee that the Spring session would continue.
Prior to Fall semester closure:
Students have been cleared by their prospective clinical rotation sites for the past 3 weeks. Students had the proper Personal Protective Equipment in place for set clinical rotations this 2020 fall semester. Students had access to N95 masks with set scheduled times and dates for mask fittings, however, were canceled the day before the fittings. Faculty had in place student waivers that would allow students to continue with the progress of their nursing education, knowing the high risk of catching COVID-19.
California is number 1 in nursing shortage in the country. 40 student nurses are 3 months away from graduating this fall and relieving some of the nurses in the field, who have burnout, and are working long hours. Coachella Valley has been hit hard in the state with COVID- 19 spread. It would be a great disservice not only to the student nurses who dedicated years of their lives to achieve their calling, but thousands of Coachella Valley citizens who are in desperate need of nurses in our community.
The hospitals in our area are flooded with the nursing registry, travel nurses, and float nurses. It is ESSENTIAL the nursing program at College of the Desert continues to remain open this fall, in order to supply the Coachella Valley with the nurses who can give the community quality and dedicated patient care, side by side with their brothers and sisters.
In the midst of all this chaos , College of the Desert nursing students want nothing more than to give the community of Coachella Valley a fighting chance to beat this pandemic. On behalf of the entire community of Coachella Valley, friends, family members, and the entire student nursing body of College of the Desert we are pleading that you help us open our fall semester .
We are pleading with the Board of Trustees to reconsider their decision to postpone our fall semester.
