I am Anirban Das, a young environmental activist. Today I would like to draw your attention to an important issue which is adversely affecting human life, our nature and our future. You are aware of how Super Cyclone Amphan last year and Yash this year adversely affected the public life of West Bengal. Many people have lost their homes, property, loved ones and become destitute. The main reasons behind these cyclones are climate change and rising sea level due to global warming. Storms, floods, and hurricanes are intensifying and frequent, forcing millions of people to flee their homes and become climate refugees. Global warming is increasing as a result of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and land degradation, resulting in climate change. Scientists and environmentalists have repeatedly warned that the coming years will get worse due to climate change. According to a report, Kolkata is the fourth most vulnerable Asian city (Deccan Herald, March 12, 2015). Currently migration has started in the Sundarbans (Ghoramara Island). Climate change will not only destroy our natural environment, but also our social and economic systems. On 12 December 2020, the UN Secretary-General, in recognition of both the urgency and the partnership - called on all governments to declare a "climate emergency" in their countries until carbon neutrality is achieved.

Our generation is growing up at a time when we have to deal with the worst effects of climate change. Now is the time for us to wake up. At this time we need to open our eyes, which will be possible through education. One of the main ways to solve the problem of climate change is to spread education and awareness. Schools now need to educate students about climate change. Students must take part in efforts to find a solution to this crisis. As this generation of ours will face a terrible environmental crisis in the future, if they are not educated now, they will be forced to live with dire problems in the future.

So my humble request - to add climate change and disturbed life-nature-environment as an urgent and integral part of school curriculum, students will be encouraged to understand the crisis of climate change and take scientific steps to tackle it. As climate change has created a global crisis for us, we need to focus on it and take the right steps. You can assure me that a subject called "Environmental Studies" has been introduced in the class XI and XII curriculum. However, the sad fact is that not even the slightest bit of the current acute environmental crisis is mentioned here. Also, no importance was given to it.

So my humble deligation to you - take the necessary steps to include "Climate Change" as a compulsory subject in the curriculum of all departments at all levels of our state's secondary and higher secondary levels without limiting it to two classes. And we urge you to take the necessary steps to ensure that the environment and its solutions are as important as any other subject in the curriculum, because it involves our lives and our future. I sincerely believe that West Bengal will be the first state in India to implement it and other states will follow the model of this state. And I am also glad to inform you that India will be the second country in the world to take such an initiative after Italy. We believe that with your great leadership, this initiative to tackle the problem of climate change will create a new chapter and momentum in the history of the world. I feel and believe - at least you will oblige us to take the right and timely steps to give the gift of a beautiful, clean and healthy environment free of toxins for your children.
