Edna Madzongwe: PLEASE END THE EXPORTING OF ELEPHANTS TO CHINA

Over 30 young elephants were captured in 2016 and taken away from their families in most horrific ways imaginable. These elephants, some only three years old, were captured in Zimbabwe and flown by plane to China, to be dispersed to various zoos, including the Shanghai Wild Animal Park, the Beijing Wildlife Park and the Hangzhou Safari Park, according to conservationists. A 2016 report on elephants in Asia said that 47 zoos in China hold at least 200 captive elephants.
In 2012, a shipment of eight elephants were sent to China from Zimbabwe. Later, distressing footage surfaced of one of those reportedly sent to Taiyuan Zoo showing the calf trying to smash his way out of his confine. That elephant still lives alone at the Taiyuan Zoo, while others imported into China that year are believed to be dead.
In 2015, 27 wild elephants were shipped to Chinese zoos from Zimbabwe. China Central Television reported that 24 of the elephants were at the Changlong Breeding Center of Rare and Endangered Species of Wild Animals and Plants would be used for research. There are only a handful of videos made by Chinese animal welfare groups of these calves and these images show clear signs of despression, no motivation, malnourished and surrounded only by concrete. Besides this footage, there is little known about the conditions in which these once wild elephants live.
According to conservationist 17 of the calves from 2016 ended up in Shanghai, fifteen in Beijing and 6 in Hangzhou.
A rumor has also circulated that China has a standing order for 100-200 elephant calves from Zimbabwe. We must stand against it!
These elephants matter!
Led by the African Elephant Coalition, CITES Conference in Johannesburg made a huge effort to stop the live trade in elephants. However, China, the EU, the US and Zimbabwe did not support the resolution and it failed to gain the necessary two-thirds majority to pass into law.
We must ask from our government to change its policies towards this resolution and as well as demand the Zimbabwean and Chinese Cites authorities to investigate and report the condition of the elephants recently shipped to China. #istandwithmypack
