Support commutation request with signatures for Harlan King

The Issue

#WeSupportHarlan please sign this petition to California Governor Jerry  Brown to commute the sentence of Harlan King.

Harlan was 20 when he made a trip to California from Oklahoma to celebrate his 21st birthday with his sister Michelle. During the trip, Harlan inadvertently ingested an extremely large amount of Phencyclodine, (PCP), and experienced an allergic reaction and went into a delusion. After coming down off of the PCP, Harlan was told by his mother that he was wanted for murder in California. He immediately turned himself in to authorities.

At 21 he received life without parole and was sent to Folsom Prison.

Immediately after coming down off of the PCP, Harlan made a vow of nonviolence that has remained intact for his nearly 37 years of incarceration. With only a few minor, nonviolent disciplinary infractions in maximum security prisons, including Old Folsom, New Folsom, Pelican Bay, Lancaster, Granite Reformatory and North Fork, Harlan has maintained a pathway to healing by completing his education, becoming an accomplished artist, mentoring and maintained a positive attitude of hope.

He has donated most of his artwork to charity that has generated tens of thousands of dollars to abused children's charities. He also paints portraits of deceased military personnel killed in action and donates them to the families for free. He has always felt a sense of debt to society and donating his art to society was cornerstone to his rehabilitation.

A milestone on his pathway to healing was meeting then Senator Gloria Romero. She came to the prison to meet him after he painted a portrait of Cesar Chavez. When she held his hands and cried explaining what it meant to her, Harlan felt like a human again for the first time in decades.

The memories of his abused childhood has faded and his upbeat spirit moves him forward and his family gives him inner peace, happiness and hope.

Join us and sign this petition for commutation. Let governor Brown know and give Harlan redemption.

Thank you
