Students of the ESD started this petition to Edmonds School District

The Edmonds School District has refused to take action to keep students safe from COVID, apart from cutting bus routes and nutrition breaks. However, students say: If you have to cut student resources to "keep us safe" you are not truly keeping us safe.

Students and parents alike are asking for the following:

  • N95 or KN95 masks provided by the district for student use
  • More accessible testing for students and teachers
  • Clear communication of COVID cases in schools, including the notification of those in close contact with COVID cases
  • A temporary switch to remote learning until it is safe for students and staff to return to in-person school

We would rather go remote for a week or two than live with the unknown hanging over our heads; not knowing whether you'll wake up to a positive COVID test or if school will be abruptly cancelled takes its toll. Every day we come to school we are gambling with our lives. It's impossible to know whether we'll be exposed to COVID and if we will be bringing illness home. It's impossible to know if we're safe.

If the Edmonds School District continues to allow the virus to spread and only closes schools once it becomes physically impossible to keep them open, they are facilitating the illness and the spread of that illness. By keeping schools open our district is facilitating the possibility of student and family deaths.

This plan is unsustainable at best and deadly at worst. Yet there has been a better plan all along: shut schools down. Switch to remote learning, for even a week, and give students and staff time to recuperate. Stop the spread of COVID now and prevent much longer school closures in the future. This should be an easy choice. Help us make that clear to the district.
