Petition update

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Laura Johnson
Edmonds, WA, United States

May 10, 2015 — UPDATE-We have been working diligently to improve the Woodway Fields Project Plans and to Preserve Edmonds Last Green Zoned Open Space. We have made some progress and some great connections. It is likely that 2 artificial turf fields will be constructed at this location. At this point we feel that if we want to influence the outcome, we need to change our strategy and objective.

We recently presented a proposal to the Edmonds School District. It was carefully crafted after conversations with many community members, local officials, discussion with other school district’s using the alternative infill, and MUCH research. Findings are all favorable and the product can be installed in our area.
We believe that the following request will provide the best possible SYNTHETIC turf fields: Non-toxic to humans and the environment, less invasive to the land and quite possibly a superior playing surface.

• Test Geo Turf, or other organic/non-toxic infill, on two fields in the district for playability, wearability, and warranty.

• Demonstrate good stewardship of the land by providing a NON-TOXIC artificial surface.

• Protect surrounding Washington Fish and Wildlife Conservation area and KNOWN migratory birds.

• Honor the City of Edmonds zoning codes in relation to Open Space (16.65.0010, B, 2, a, ii; and 2, b) A "reasonable alternative which creates a minimum of surface and vegetation disturbance" is possible.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Share with as many Edmonds School District residents as possible, especially the sports community who will be using the fields. Come to our LAST CHANCE RALLY at the School Board Meeting on Tuesday 5/12. (20420 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.) At 5:45 this peaceful, respectful rally will gather as the school board prepares to vote on the development of the fields. Bring your kids with you. Bring signs that clearly state your position. Suggestions-

ATHLETES FOR NON-TOXIC PLAYING SURFACES
HEALTHY FIELDS/HEALTHY KIDS
ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
KEEP OUR OPEN SPACES GREEN
NO CRUMB RUBBER ON OUR OPEN SPACES
PROTECT THE BIRDS.

We expect media will be there....the more who participate, the better!

Our children deserve the safest possible turf fields. We should, out of an abundance of caution, provide fields that have NO possible toxic risk to human or environmental health. Traditional "crumb rubber" turf fields are filled with recycled tires; it is undisputed that they contain carcinogens. Limited studies have been done on their safety and much speculation has been raised as to the "possibility" of a connection with an increased cancer risk. Even a slight possibility is NOT acceptable for our children, especially when there are alternatives.

We invoke the precautionary principle to risk management that states “if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or to the environment, in the absence of scientific consensus that the action or policy is not harmful, the burden of proof that it is not harmful falls on those taking an action.”

Let the Edmonds School District know our children deserve the BEST, our environment deserves BETTER, and we can make that happen! The Edmonds School District has the opportunity to set an example and listen to the community.
