Edison Students against Bathroom Pass Limits

The Issue

Edison High School in Huntington Beach is unfairly preventing students from using the restroom, which goes against the government's duty to protect the health and safety of students.

This act is inherently unconstitutional. The 4th Amendment protects individuals from unreasonable searches and invasions of privacy, and the bathroom policy recording the # and duration of bathroom visits could be seen as an infringement. Girls often require more bathroom visits than 2, due to female bodily functions. Under Title IX, schools must provide equal opportunities and treatment regardless of gender, and this policy fails to accommodate girls' specific needs when ovulating.

Additionally, schools and the government have a duty to protect the health and safety of students. Considering that students with 6th period have to remain at school for ~8 hours and that passing period does not allow all students to use the restroom (long lines), capping the amount of bathroom breaks is unreasonable.  Allowing students to have an unlimited or increased amount of bathroom passes can prevent the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and aid those with conditions like anxiety or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

We demand that Edison eliminate the restrictive bathroom policy enforced through 5-Star app and replace it with a more compassionate and health-conscious approach. Every student deserves to have their basic needs respected without fear of penalties of embarrassment.
