On average, 30% of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner, while globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner (WHO statistics).
It's 2014. It's long overdue that we designate the clothing term 'Wife Beater' as 'permanently out of fashion'. It's time we ditched this glib, offensive and insensitive term for tank tops, which makes a mockery of gender equality and the fight against gender-based violence. We would never accept the use of a clothing term which describes child abuse or racial stereotypes, and rightly so. It should be no different when it comes to gender-based violence. Words and language have power, and no one who has ever experienced violence from a loved one should ever have to hear that experience used so casually and 'ironically'. We are better than that.
eBay, as a major online retailer, has a responsibility and an opportunity to display their solidarity with victims of gender-based violence everywhere by no longer using this term for its tank tops. In doing so, it can also show other retailers that we the customers will not accept the use of this term anymore.
Recent global prevalence figures indicate that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. So statistically, you have either been a victim of gender-based violence yourself or know someone close to you who has been. There's a lot to be done in the fight against it, but at the very least this simple gesture can send a message of solidarity from all of us to the victims of gender-based violence, and that using a term which makes light of their experience is something that we will no longer accept.
