Petition updateStop castrating gorillas!Yet another castrated gorilla
Jane Rasmussen-DewarTN, United States
May 17, 2016
On May 9, 2016 the EEP has castrated yet another gorilla – four year old Douli in Amsterdam. His elder brothers Shambe and Bembosi were castrated earlier already, because they are deemed "surplus males" by the EEP's bureaucracy. Keeping them together in a bachelor group, as would the American SSP in comparable cases, apparently was not an option. Why? The reassurance by EEP vice-coordinator Neil Bemment from February 2014 that "no more gorillas have been nominated for castration at this time" has been suspended within two years only. Which is both a shame and a proof of their shortcomings in regard to a modern and adequate gorilla husbandry.
