On Tuesday 16 October I headed off to parliament to watch my petition be debated by the wonderful Wera Hobhouse, MP for Bath. As I sat there listening to my petition be named in parliament I couldn't help but feel slightly emotional...
Wera began by sharing the story of one girl who had struggled to receive a diagnosis of anorexia because she hadn't be thin enough - I was reminded at this point that this happens to so many people every single day. People who are struggling mentally but because they aren't "thin enough" there is NO help available. How is this right? How is it fair that people get turned away and are left feeling unworthy, suicidal and not valued at all?
The debate was fantastic at getting people involved and raising awareness but slightly frustrating at points when there seemed to be so much blame on social media for the lack of treatment. I want to say a special thank you to Lorna, who openly shared her story with Wera and the press to help raise awareness of such an important issue.
SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT THE REASON PEOPLE ARE GETTING TURNED AWAY FROM SUPPORT ...!
Whilst the debate was a huge step in the right direction, receiving BBC News coverage amongst others there is still a huge amount that needs to be done!
We cannot stop here - it is now even more important than ever that we make this change happen! This problem is not going away in the short term but we have the potential to change this. Following the debate it is vital that we keep up the momentum and make sure that even more people sign sign sign!
Please help me change this!
