TW: Sexual assault

In light of the recent arrest of Dustyn Durbin, over the past week many women have come forward with their own stories of assault within EMU Fraternity & Sorority Life that involves past and current members. During this time, there seems to be no single person or professional that these women can go to for support within the community.

This is why we are advocating for a full-time coordinator for EMU Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL). The position of an FSL Coordinator involves working closely with all four councils (CPC, IFC, MGC, NPHC). Duties may include attending council meetings, facilitating educational trainings and leadership programs, creating a positive and engaging atmosphere for members, and assisting in planning, organizing, and executing FSL events. With a full-time coordinator in place, there would be more focus on sexual assault trainings, education, open, honest, and prompt communication, and resources readily available for members with hopes to prevent assaults occurring in the future.

Currently at Eastern Michigan University, there is no assigned FSL Coordinator. However, previously we were only given a part-time coordinator. This caused a majority of tough situations to either not get solved in a timely manner or to be dealt with by undergraduate students or the FSL graduate assistant. Some further issues brought about by the lack of leadership have caused stress on the individuals in associated organizations and active students on FSL councils. It is difficult to solve or even handle important issues such as sexual assault when it is being placed on the shoulders of students on their respective councils.

If you want a community to improve, you have to find ways for them to not just be a self-governing community of students. The lack of concrete leadership has resulted in a lack of resources and proper programming for the FSL community.

List of demands for the FSL Coordinator:

  • Full-time paid position
  • Woman
    • If women or other sexual assault survivors choose to and feel comfortable sharing their story, they may be more comfortable doing so to a woman
  • Well-versed in sexual assault policies and resources
  • Willingness to have tough conversations and deal with tough situations
  • Willingness to organize and co-faciltate sexual assault programming such as...
    • How to recognize sexual assault
    • How to talk to someone or support someone that comes forward to you about their sexual assault
    • Relationship violence
    • Sexual violence
    • Consent
    • Interpersonal communication
    • Bystander intervention
  • Communication
    • Available on social media platforms
    • Email
    • Phone
    • Office hours
    • Open for appointments
  • Trained in diversity and inclusion
  • Experience in or with a Greek organization (CPC, MGC, or NPHC)

Overall, the community needs and deserves someone who is willing to support us as students while being an unbiased, safe, and respectful person that all individuals and chapters feel comfortable going to in regards to anything. Furthermore, we deserve someone who is going to show up and be the community's voice by taking appropriate actions on the matters at hand.

Thank you for your time reading this and we hope for your support,
