The litter problem in East Renfrewshire is now absolutely unacceptable. 

Over recent months, local people have taken direct action and have started litter collection groups.  That is to be applauded, but it highlights a problem.  East Renfrewshire Council must take action.  Short term reactive measures are not enough.

We choose to live here and we pay handsomely for the privilege through high house prices, council tax and business rates.  We should not be faced with parks, streets and car parks full of litter.  It is an eyesore, a danger to animals and harmful to the environment.

We call for the following measures:

1. Greater allocation of funding to community litter wardens responsible for direct action and coordinated planning with local volunteers (to be provided with litter collection kits).
2. Installation of improved, bigger bins in parks and other public places, done in a way that blends with the environment.
3. Increased civil penalties for those who drop litter.
4. Increased education for all East Renfrewshire learners on the issue.

We want East Renfrewshire to be the flagship local authority area in Scotland for cleanliness and we call upon East Renfrewshire Council to deliver.
