Good morning from a sunny Giffnock,
The sun is out (or it was 10 minutes ago!) and Huntly Park has been saved by community led action. All great stuff. However, the place is strewn with litter and, let me put this politely, it is really hacking me off.
'Pick Up for Giffnock and Thornliebank' captures the dual theme of pandemic recovery and the practical picking up of litter.
For the best part of a year since I left the RAF and set up a law firm in my home area of Giffnock, I have been filling bags with rubbish collected from the local area.
Still the problem exists. We need a radical change in how we address the underlying attitudes that cause this. That needs new leadership. As we showed with Huntly Park, truly effective leadership can come from the community. I am arranging a community litter collection at 1pm on Saturday 22 May. We will collect litter, but we will also send another message to East Renfrewshire Council: we expect far better.
