Dear Friend of Giffnock,
I started this project last year as a lifelong Giffnock resident, with the encouragement of like minded neighbours. Since that time, hundreds have registered their support. Inspired by the positive reactions both here and across the world (ex pats - thank you!), I decided to become a Community Councillor. I was privileged to be elected to Giffnock Community Council earlier this month. I intend to make it aware of the petition and ask it to note the strength of support. Thereafter, the body to influence is East Renfrewshire Council. I will be asking it to secure Fields in Trust status for the lower playing fields. That will put an end, once and for all, to the many years of uncertainty.
In some ways that will be the easy part. As petitioners we are also calling for improvements to the park. We have a shared vision and a will. We are ambitious for Giffnock. That shared ambition for our community drives me and I will be working hard to turn it into a reality to benefit all of us. This is part of a wider fight against loneliness and isolation.
Pictured is the Hughenden community café and shop near RAF High Wycombe. It too is in a King George V Playing Field and it inspired me. We can have the best here in Giffnock if we pull together and make it happen.
