Dear friend of Huntly Park,
I have been campaigning for Huntly Park for 20 years now. My dad had been doing it for 20 years before. Looking back, I realise I did not campaign hard enough for something I care about. I thought that emails from afar to the council could do the job. I was very wrong.
Only by coming together and acting publicly as we are doing can we secure the park's future. I actually think that we will, but there can be no complacency.
The park must be protected. That can be done by East Renfrewshire Council obtaining Fields in Trust status for it. The council knows how to do it; it is not a difficult process. That will be the first stage. In parallel, we seek improvements such as a community led café in the pavilion which can serve as a wellness focal point and a hub for local businesses to contribute.
Making the area safe must be priority. Remediating the quarry area is still necessary, as is delivering justice to those adversely affected. These are complex issues that need intelligent planning and delivery. But that is not done by housing development in our much loved park.
