North Berwick is a popular and beautiful town blessed with clean, unspoilt beaches which are a significant reason so many people visit the area. The East Beach beyond the boating/bathing pond is increasingly wild and undeveloped.
East Lothian Council has submitted a planning application (no 15/01022/PCL) to change the use of the beach area and extend the small existing car park outwards on to the beach by up to 9 metres. During a typical spring high tide, extending the car park would cut the beach in two and stop people being able to walk the length of the beach. The proposed extension to the car park will provide 10 extra spaces, and the Council has budgeted £350,000 for the work.
We, the undersigned, petition East Lothian Council not to extend the Marine Parade car park outwards onto the beach and instead to maintain it for use as a beach for the people of North Berwick and its visitors.
