Representative Ruth Ann Gaines was an educator of Drama and Theater Arts for 40 years at East High School, was named Iowa Teacher of the Year and now serves  as the Representative of North and East Des Moines in the Iowa House of Representatives. Ms. Gaines has been a stalwart in social and racial justice since the 1960's and is a pillar of the community. 

With the renovation of the dilapidated theater at Des Moines East High School, it is only appropriate that we name the new facility after Representative Ruth Ann Gaines.

Ruth Ann has touched tens of thousands of lives through her classes at East High and Des Moines Area Community College. She has also shown fearless resolve during  the winds of change as a member of the Iowa Black Caucus in the House of Representatives. Her fearless spirit has inspired generations, even in the face of endless struggle. 

The current theater at East High School is nameless.  As an alumnus and previous student, I propose that the new complex be emblazoned with the name, "Ruth Ann Gaines Theater of Performing Arts" as a tribute to a true warrior for the students of Des Moines East High and the human rights of all Iowan's. 

When Ms. Gaines traveled to Washington DC as "Teacher of the Year", she put East High on the national stage. It's only fitting that East High now puts Ms. Gaines' name on the school theaters stage!
