In a stunning display of pomposity, the new School Board Chair Mary Cordray reminded everyone in attendance that their policy prohibits referencing anyone by name during the public comment portion of the Beaufort County School Board meetings. Mrs. Cordray cites a long standing policy, but does allow that this policy has not been enforced for some time. Apparently the pressure being applied by people who are outraged that Dr. Moss remains employed has gotten to the board. One board member, Earl Campbell claims to have received threats and referenced a biblical verse, as follows: "When you dig a ditch with me or any other board member, make sure you don't fall in that ditch, and I would suggest anyone who made threats read the story of Mordecai, Haman and Esther," Campbell said, referring to the biblical story that ends with the antagonists' hanging. "That's all I wanted to say." It appears that making threats against your constituents is a form of speech that is tolerated by this board, but addressing someone by name is not. What began as a case of poor judgment and improper ethics by Dr. Moss is quickly turning into gross incompetence on the part of the school board. We must prepare for a long fight, one that will involve replacing existing school board members, so that we can retake OUR school board and restore some level-headed sanity.
